Painting occupies a specific territory where I try to find meaning in the process. As a painter friend recently voiced and many years ago I heard Wolf Kahn say, it is the glimpse(ing) of a (some)thing which generates excitement and speaks volumes for me. The obvious does nothing. I recall a passage from Kafka I read in my teens in which the principle referred to the act of looking over his shoulder and in that second having a flash of light reflect from a window above. It is something like this spontaneous and etherial event I hope to have my paintings capture. That and show me the next step to take, which, like a novelist pursuing the story, will hopefully help complete the picture of an event.
